A great group chat name makes people smile when the notification pops up, and it tells everyone at a glance which of their dozen chats just lit up. The only real rule on iPhone comes from Apple Support: you can name a group conversation only when everyone in it is using iMessage. If even one person is on green-bubble SMS, the name option disappears. Below you’ll find more than 200 original names sorted by who’s in the chat, plus the exact steps for naming groups in Messages, WhatsApp, and Google Messages.

Group naming rules by app
Each messaging app handles group names a little differently. This table compares who can name a group and what’s required, based on each company’s own support pages.
| App | Requirement to name a group | Who can rename | Name limit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Messages (iMessage) | Everyone must be using iMessage on an Apple device; SMS/MMS groups can’t be named | Any member | Not published | Apple Support article 104977 |
| None; works in any group | Any member by default; admins can restrict it to admins only | 100 characters, emojis count | WhatsApp Help Center | |
| Google Messages | All members need RCS chats turned on | Members of the RCS group | Not published | Google Messages Help |
Apple Support also notes that the group name and photo are shared: everyone in the iMessage conversation sees the same name and icon. Google Messages started sharing group names and icons with everyone in RCS chats after a 2025 update; older Google help text says only you can see the name, so expect some differences on older app versions.
How to change your group chat name
On iPhone or iPad (Messages)
- Open Messages and go to the group conversation.
- Tap the group icons at the top of the thread.
- On iOS 26, tap Edit, then Edit Name and Photo. On iOS 18 and earlier, tap Change Name and Photo, shown in blue under the group icons.
- Type the new group name. You can also take a photo, choose one from your library, or pick an emoji or Memoji for the group icon.
- Tap Done.
If you don’t see the option, someone in the chat isn’t using iMessage. Ask them to check that iMessage is turned on, or start a new group with only iMessage users.
On WhatsApp
- Open the group and tap the group name at the top to open Group info.
- Tap the edit option next to the group name.
- Type the new name (up to 100 characters) and save it.
If the edit option is missing, a group admin has limited group info edits to admins. They can change that in Group permissions.
On Android (Google Messages)
- Open the RCS group conversation.
- Tap the three-dot More menu, then Group details.
- Tap the group name, enter the new name, and tap OK.
Tips for making your own
- Start with what the chat is for. A trip, a team, a family, a project. The purpose gives you a theme.
- Add the group’s running joke. The best names are built on something only your group would get.
- Use a pun formula. Swap one word of a familiar phrase with a word about your group: “Dorm Sweet Dorm,” “Couch Committee.”
- Keep it short enough to read in a notification. Long names get cut off on the lock screen. Three to five words is plenty.
- Add one emoji. An emoji at the start makes a chat easy to spot in a long list.
- Keep it kind. A name that teases one person can sting more than you expect, especially in family or work chats.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I name my group chat on iPhone?
At least one person in the group isn’t using iMessage, so the conversation is SMS or MMS. Apple only allows names for groups where everyone is on iMessage with an Apple device.
Can everyone see the group chat name?
On iMessage and WhatsApp, yes, every member sees the same name. On Google Messages, newer versions share the name with all RCS members.
Can I add a photo to a group chat on iPhone?
Yes. In the same Name and Photo screen, you can take a photo, choose one from your library, or use an emoji or Memoji as the group icon.
How long can a WhatsApp group name be?
Up to 100 characters, according to the WhatsApp Help Center. Emojis, symbols, and spaces count toward the total.
Who can change a WhatsApp group name?
Any member, by default. Admins can change the group permissions so only admins can edit the group name, icon, and description.
Does renaming a group notify everyone?
Yes. Messages, WhatsApp, and Google Messages all post a small notice in the chat showing who changed the name, so pick something everyone will be happy to see.
